Octopus Card
We suggest you to buy a regular Octopus Card and a separate round-trip ticket for the Airport Express (unless you have prearranged your accommodation to pick you up). The normal single trip is HKD100. However round trip ticket is station specific; if your accommodation is in Hong Kong Island the cost is HKD180, else it would be HKD160 but you will be paying more to travel to the conference revenue. You can buy both as soon as you land in Hong Kong at the Airport Express desk in the arrivals hall of Chek Lap Kok International Airport. In addition, all MTR stations in the city sell Octopus Cards, which will cost you HK$150. Fifty of that is a refundable deposit on the card; the remaining amount is the credit available for ticket fares. When you exhaust your available credit, you can top up your card at any of the automated add-value machines located in all MTR stations. You simply insert your pass into the machine along with a $50, $100 or $500 bill. The machine will then transfer the appropriate cash value to your card and presto, you’re ready to make hassle-free journeys to even the most far-flung parts of Hong Kong.

Currency
HKD is pegged to USD and the only currency accepted in retail (other than credit card) is HKD or Octopus Card. :-) The HK banking industry is very competitive and the exchange rate is quoted in real-time. However, if you don’t have a bank account in HK, you would need to pay handling charge for exchanging foreign currency. If you have a HK bank account, the exchange is free. Opening an account in HK takes only a few minutes with the teller *after* you queue to get in front of the teller. :-)
