Game design principles are fairly known and my sense of them is that role-play games are different in a number of respects. For example: game space is normally quite separate from reality, whereas role plays the boundry is a lot more porous. Similarily rules of the game - normally games have a distinct set of rules on how to play whereas role-play games the rules are more social and hence flexible. All this means that to create fun and interesting role-plays requires understanding these principles and implementing them in particular ways.
